2018, Acrylic and carved wood, 29 1/4″ x 15″ x 6 1/4″; Undersong is an ever present, inner music below consciousness, like a song of lamentation, longing, or love. We are born with a song. Three undersongs under lay this piece; the song of our mortal journey to the mountain top, the song of longing for nature and the song of being loved by earlier generations, people of the past. The composition leads the eye through Tuscan Cypress* shaded ravine and up to a Yosemite mountain shining in the sun, as a spatial metaphor for our life journey of mortality to another higher state of being. William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) writes about our inborn longing for nature in his poem, The Lake Isle of Innsfree.
