Four Consolations – Doors Closed

2015, Mixed medium: Acrylic, carved wood, paper quilling, 27 1/4″ x 22 1/2″ x 6″; Small observations can flood our consciousness with unexpected consolation after a great loss or trauma. Most often these consolations are simple things like the sparkle of light on a lake, the turn of a horses’ head or a wren’s song. This piece chronicles four consolations: trees, music, distance and touching animals. There are many more, each person finds their own.
The black doors open like a medicine cabinet revealing the elixirs within. At the bottom sides of the frame are two sun spools, symbolizing radiance and the wheel of fortune/destiny. The quilled paper (something new to my repertoire) encrusted doors implying many spiralings.
