George Abend Works Biography

George Abend was born in 1922 in New York City.  He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, 1946-1947, then California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco 1948-1950.  In 1951, he went to Paris to study at Academie de la Grande Chaumiere until 1952.  1953 to 1954 he attended the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.

In 1962 he began his teaching career at Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Cedar Educational Center in Pittsburgh.  He was Visiting Artist at California State College, Los Angeles, as well as Graphic film consultant at University of Southern California from 1966-1969.  Georges work was shown in solo exhibitions from 1945-1975 in San Francisco, Guadalajara, Paris,  Pennsylvania and New York City.  His group exhibits in San Francisco include California Palace of the Legion of Honor, The Art Institute, and the Museum of Art.

As an Abstract Expressionist, he developed a gestural, theatrical for of action painting generally with an underpinning of natural forms.   In the 50’s and 60’s, he was one of the first visual artists to work with the environmental light & sound program, Vortex. He was active in the East from 62-66, then on the West Coast 66-69.   In the 70’s, he painted large abstract canvases designed to be installed as room-sized environments.  George was an accomplished musician, playing piano, drums, percussion & clarinet to name a few.   He died in 1976 in Santa Cruz, California.
